LMFF’08: Dotti Pop-Up

22nd of March, 2008

I was entirely unprepared for the crowd and had a terrible vantage point, but nevertheless it stands as my first ever runway shoot.

It was a fun show, and these pictures resulted in my first commercial engagement to shoot a later show, so they're kind of a milestone.

Hardhat Zone

20th of March, 2008

I'm finally implementing the changes I've been working on for the last few weeks.  I wish I were able to devote more time to the task, but unfortunately I just don't have that much available to me.  Anyway I've finally gotten to the point where I've managed to complete some of the features which have been on my wishlist since I opened the doors on this place.

I only wish I had been able to keep blogging while working on the necessary PHP.  At least now all my media will have a place on this site.  I stopped posting partly because anything I posted I'd have to repost once these changes were in place, so now that they're happening there's no reason to hold back anymore.

I'll update this post as implementation proceeds.

So far:

- Plugins transferred
- Theme updated
- New navigation works (finally)
- Sidebar Layout done for now (but evolving)
- Reduced the number of queries
- Headers complete, both for IE and FireFox
- Fixed mousovers for IE6
- Catching up on photo content (piece by piece)

... and all this 5 minutes before Wordpress 2.5 comes out with a built-in gallery.  I console myself in the knowledge that I would have had to mod the shit out of that too.

I'm essentially done now with updating the theme. Most of it works, and finally tweaks will happen over time.

Blogging Requires Energy

3rd of March, 2008

I haven't written a post in quite some time, and I'm really feeling like I have a few pent-up things to post about, but I've been so tired lately that every time I start to write, the process of forming a cohesive post on a difficult subject just seems like too much effort.

So, I've decided to post something easy -- a little roadmap for this site, which I hope will encourage me to check items off that list, instead of leaving it the unfinished mess that it is.

So, in no particular order, here's what I think I want to do with this place.  I'm still ironing out the details so I suppose

Axe the mini-forum

Driven only by the existence of BBPress and with no need whatsoever for a forum here, I'd decided to install and integrate it.  I might have kept it around if I could be arsed actually making it look like the rest of the site.

It's gallery time

Finding time to go shooting isn't easy, but I'm definitely encouraged by having decent equipment finally.  I think right now, I'd just like a place to dump my most interesting pics simply to have a record of my progress as a developing photographer (pardon the pun).  I don't expect any art to come of it necessarily, but nevertheless a web gallery seems like the right way to go.

Photoblog anyone?

The nice thing about photoblogs is that the content doesn't have to be brilliant, it just has to be a picture.  With any luck it'll be a picture worth looking at.

I quite like photoblogs, except that prefab packages tend to be lacking in thumbnail organisational structure.  I'd like to post pictures chronologically, but have them browsable by category after the fact.  If I can achieve that reasonably easily, I'll skip the gallery mentioned above.

Separate ivovic.net and ivovic.com

Right now ivovic.com redirects to ivovic.net but I have some plans for the .com domain, so soon I'll be performing surgery on the conjoined twins.  Anyone with updated bookmarks won't even notice, which is just the way I want it.

Sidebar your honour!

I sorely want to finish working on the "aggregation zone" on this blog.  I would like the sidebar here to tie into the stuff I'll be doing with photos, so that it's a one-stop-shop of what there is on the rest of the site.  I quite like being able to find a website's most recent activity within a couple of clicks, so that's what I'll be aiming for.

Attention-sufficit, please

I really like starting things because I enjoy the fresh appeal a new project brings but I'm not big on completing anything, usually because completion takes time and by the time it gets to that stage a dozen new things have already cropped up.  I'm really more of an ideas man, and I need a team to polish up all the details that I really enjoy seeing, but have little interest in actually implementing.

Unfortunately, this is my personal site so I have to do it all myself.  Wish me luck with actually finishing anything.

Australia Apologises

13th of February, 2008

Today, Kevin Rudd is going to offer an apology to Indigenous Australians for the misdeeds perpetrated upon them by the nation of Australia.

Aboriginal girls from Ntaria, about 110km west of Alice Springs

At a time when there's public outcry over the mistreatment, abuse and rape of Aboriginal children within their own societies, Australia is inexplicably going to apologise for taking their children away.

I realise that indigenous affairs were handled extremely poorly, and that Aboriginal people are extremely upset by this terrible episode in our nation's history, but how do we justify apologising for the wholesale removal of children, from a people who apparently consider child rape a normal part of growing up?  How can we stomach apologising to a culture which tolerates that kind of behaviour?

Clearly not all Indigenous Australians rape their kids, and not all are constantly drunk or high on paint and petrol, but an extremely significant portion of them are, and the rest seem to think it's someone else's responsibility to fix it.

Of course I don't belive that the stolen generation was particularly advantaged by the efforts of the government at the time, but that just means it wasn't done correctly in the first place.  I'm inclined to suggest that rather than apologise for removing children, we should take what we've learned since that time, and try again, since they're obviously not doing anything about it themselves.

All citizens of this country should be treated equally, and have the same demands put upon them.  No matter what colour your skin is, if you don't seek to educate your kids and keep them in school, if you don't exercise due care for them, feed them, keep a roof over their heads, etc.  If you tolerate the sexual abuse of your children, or spend most of your time fucked up on mind-altering substances, then you should have your children taken away.

It's just that simple.

A glimpse of rich Aboriginal culture, all too rare these days

Despite the best efforts and extreme amounts of money expended, Aboriginal kids are still suffering.  Given that it's happening on a fairly large scale, there's no solution but to remove the children en masse.  Don't like it? well, I suppose we could always apologise again a bit later, in the mean time there will be less 6 year old bleeding vaginas, and I don't give a shit who we offend to make that happen.

If it were up to me, I'd demand that the intelligent, productive and respectable members of Aboriginal society (of which there are many) stop filing pointless Native Title suits for a while (we're not going to move Sydney), and begin working tirelessly to educate their own people and bring their standard of living up to a level in which children can thrive.  If they can do that, then they'll have earned the respect inherent in an apology, but until then all they're doing is using it as another excuse for their people's failure.

A blackfella's gotta be accountable.  It's not all whitefella's fault, but remember...  if you want compensation at any point, the British government is that way -->

Classic Pancakes on Shrove Tuesday

5th of February, 2008

Today is Shrove Tuesday, or 'Holy shit it's Pancake Day' to us atheists.  There are hundreds of wonderful and interesting pancake recipes, but I always prefer to go with what I have handy so the recipe I'm posting today is an extremely simple one which you can modify to include whatever you prefer.

Plain pancakes can be served either sweet or savoury.  The sugar content in this recipe doesn't impact on their suitability for savoury dishes.  In fact, I had a few of these for breakfast with poached egg, fried bacon and holandaise sauce, then a couple this afternoon with fresh fruit and whipped cream.

Of course your taste will vary, and you can choose to include fruit like grated apple, fresh blueberries or whatever straight into the mixture if you prefer.

Makes approximately 10 pancakes.

Ingredients

2 cups plain flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
2 tablespoons caster sugar
1 1/2 cups milk (or a little extra to taste)
2 eggs at room temperature
1 lemon (zest only)
60g butter, melted, cooled
spray olive oil, or extra melted butter for cooking

Method

Sift flour, sugar and baking powder into a large bowl.

Whisk eggs until lightly fluffy, whisk in milk and melted butter until combined.  Add to flour mixture, gently whisking until smooth.

Mix in grated lemon zest, then cover and stand batter for 15 minutes.

Heat a non-stick frying pan over low heat.  Lightly spray pan with olive oil spray, or brush pan with a little extra butter.  Pour 1/4 cup of batter into center of pan and allow to spread naturally.  Cook until bubbles start to appear on surface then turn and cook until golden.

Repeat with remaining batter, greasing pan between pancakes.

Serving

Serve warm, topped with icing sugar, preserved or fresh fruit, maple syrup, honey, whipped cream or anything else you like.

I also encourage you to try savoury options like bacon and hungarian salami with warm camembert cheese, or fried ham and spreadable philadelphia cream cheese topped with halved cherry tomatoes.

Have fun, and enjoy Pancake Day.
