A ‘Trouble Ticket’ Plugin

24th of April, 2008

I posted the following appeal to the wordpress support forums, but I've decided to post it here too, to allow discussion in case casual passers-by or potential plugin authors wanted to have a place to throw down their comments.

I'm assuming the fine moderators at the wordpress forums will not allow the topic to stay open very long.

The appeal is as follows:

Basically I'd like to use wordpress to allow registered users to post trouble tickets via a form embedded in a wordpress page.

The faux trouble tickets would just be regular posts to a category as defined in the form, and attributed to the account of the person posting the ticket, even though that person doesn't have author level privilege.

Security and authentication etc isn't a problem as this could easily be handled via template conditionals and .htaccess -- not that this is even required in my case, as the site is for internal use only.

Once posted, of course... the "ticket" could be commented on just like any other post, and of course "closed" by blog admins who could turn off comments... so this functionality isn't required, that's just up to us to theme it correctly.

If you can point me to something like this as a wordpress plugin I'd love you long time, but I'm not holding my breath, so I have a couple of offers to any plugin authors reading...

If you see value in this project and would like to add it to your collection I would gladly chip in with a financial motivator.

On the other hand, if you're not interested in making this plugin part of your contribution, then I'd certainly be interested in commissioning the work, and making the plugin available myself. Obviously this would cost me more, so I'm hoping you'll want the credit.

Anyone interested in discussing this further can email me at milorad@gmail.com.

Thanks for your consideration.

Please post your input or ask your questions here.

Thanks.

As you can see, I was overwhelmed with responses :)

Luckily there were a couple of bites by email, and it looks like the project will go ahead.

This is a bit of a niche thing, I know, but with more people using wordpress as a CMS each day it’s not totally out of the question that someone would want a ticketing plugin.

If you’re interested in obtaining a copy when it’s complete you should post here and let me know.

This is just the kind of thing we’ve been looking for. We’ve hacked together a homebrew solution for the moment (primarily for customer machines in for repair, so they can see updates, post questions, etc.) and wrapped it in some CSS to look vaguely like our WP site, but it’s not ideal.

    Any update?

I’ve actually almost got this working; I’m having some trouble with the posting though. Mine uses a simple form to post to a php file.  So you ahve to use the php plugin for this to work

But when I post to the page where the code is I get an extra file name inserted, any thoughts?

    Hey everyone,

I’m the developer of the Wordpress Help Desk Plugin mentioned above. The project has been moved to my personal website. http://ozblog.mmow.biz/2008/08/20/29/

This project was originally designs for the Wordpress MU platform however there has been an increasing amount interest from standard Wordpress users. The next release of the plugin will be compatible with both versions of Wordpress.

The project is still in mid development and an early beta release for the MU platform is available, some advanced functionality is missing however the ticketing system is complete finished.
