Tarisai Vushe: The Aftermath

31st of October, 2007

Tarisai has been dragged kicking and screaming from the Australian Idol stage.  As she fades into obscurity, lets take a moment to laugh at her death throws.

Here's some audio of her rambling like a bloody idiot during an interview.  She doesn't even know why she's angry anymore.  Maybe she never did.

Find out what you're saying!

But was she really fake?  Well, she was as polite as tea and crumpets at first, but now that she's been booted off the show, she's taken every opportunity to express her disdain for fellow contestants.  As J.D. points out on Behind Idol, that's a massive step backwards for her credibility.  Going out of her way to badmouth Natalie Gauci is pretty low.

Thanks to bleachy_dude, I've uploaded another interview she did with Idol judge Kyle, on his syndicated radio show Kyle & Jackie-O after her dismissal from Idol.  She seems a little more collected here, but I can completely understand why she rubs everyone the wrong way.

Sounds to me like she's feeling a lot more free to be herself lately, which is precisely how this whole thing began.

Shhhh now Tarisai... it's quiet-time now.

Ummm OK… did they cut and paste that… or is that really just one LONG rant?

there’s a guy in the background you can hear just saying “umm yeah yeah…” but I’m sure they’ve cut the part with him asking questions.

Either way, her answers are nonsensical.

Thank you for the great audio files!  I love hearing Tarisai talk!  She is so beautiful, has such an amazing voice, even hearing her speak is captivating.  Any time you want to put up audio files of her speaking, from anywhere, I’ll listen to them.

The first audio file was a bit hard to understand.  Where was it from?  I had to listen to it a few times.  Basically she is just crying there, and I don’t think it really matters what she said there.

The second audio file was far more audible, and more positive, and really demonstrates how a responsible interview should be conducted.  I am quite amazed that Kyle Sandilands was able to make such a responsible interview as that.  He should get an award or something for doing that.

Tarisai was caught between a rock and a hard place, due primarily to jealousy I think, because her voice is so outstanding, so far above the other contestants, and indeed anyone who has ever been on Idol in the past 5 years, and far above most of the singers in the music industry as a whole.  I can struggle and perhaps think of 10 people in the music industry who I can genuinely say would have the right to say that they are better singers than Tarisai.  Probably Missy Higgins in Australia, Mariah Carey, Prince, George Michael, Celine Dion, and yeah that’s about it.  Actually John Farnham in his heyday probably competed.  It really is an exceptional voice.

Let’s be honest though, she did say “thank you” in a condescending, arrogant way, and has admitted it.  She didn’t really listen to what the judges said.  Yes, she should have.  She was stuck on being polite, and trying not to get too upset that that was her coping mechanism.  Does it make her fake?  Well, its probably a bad term to use - it makes her arrogant and sarcastically polite and condescending.  Her performances were also not perfect, and she could improve.  The part about her “not giving 100%” was very true, as she reached a peak in the songs then sang them in a weaker way later.  She certainly could have and should have improved.  The sad part was that her final performance was one in which she did address those problems.  Although in saying that, choosing a Veronicas song was absurd for her.  I would have preferred to have seen her and Natalie swap songs - Natalie can be in the Veronicas while Tarisai can do Divinyls justice.  And her hair style looked fake.  It looked like a wig.  Why didn’t Kyle talk about that?

I think that it is reprehensible for them to criticise her like that, about things that had nothing at all to do with her performance.  They didn’t mention any specifics, just made snap comments that had no basis in reality.  People listen to this show, and they make decisions that affect people’s careers based on these snap comments.  Its just not acceptable for Mark to make such a snap comment, and then for Dicko to carry on with it.

I am sure that I am not the only one out there who has been in the same situation as Tarisai was in, caught between a rock and a hard place, where you can’t do anything right.  It doesn’t matter what she did there, she was always going to be made out to look like a monster.  She was set up, in that sense.  The thing is that when you are in that situation, and once you realise you are, you just have to ride out that storm.  Don’t worry about it.  Eventually it will be over.  Once its over you can either move on or fight back about it.

George Michael was slammed for his breaking his deal with Sony, and put out an entire album making fun of Sony - he got his revenge.  Later he was slammed for his lewd conduct conviction, and he made a song slamming that - and got his revenge.  Eminem, 50 cent, many other artists have responded to nasty vicious attacks, with success.

Tarisai is now in that position, where the Australian public knows about what has happened, and we are now just waiting to see what her response will be.  In the end, nobody will care if she said one minute thing about Natalie while she was upset that she didn’t really mean.  What they will care about is whether she will come back with a big bitchslap song that will make people sit up and take notice.

Alanis Morisette’s entire first album was revenge on an ex boyfriend.

I’d love to see Tarisai release an album full of revenge.  Ideally released the day before they have the final verdict for who has won Australian Idol.

Even people that absolutely hate her will still buy it.  They’ll be interested in seeing what she has to say.

That’s what you do.  Don’t listen to idiots like Mark Holden.  He doesn’t know how to channel energy and emotion.  He puts on these fake touchdowns for lousy performances like Natalie’s the other night.

Well thanks for your extensive and interesting response.  You made some valid points, albeit from the point of view of a Tarisai fan.

I think discussion is wonderful, but in order to discuss a topic we must be using the same frame of reference otherwise it’s impossible to understand each other.  That’s why discussing music is so difficult.

There were a few key things you mentioned in your post which would seem to indicate that these similar frames of reference do not exist here.

For instance, you mentioned John Farnham as a worthy voice, and Natalie’s supposedly lousy performance.  You also seem to think there’s something to be avenged here… as if there was malicious intent toward Tarisai.

As far as I’m concerned you may as well be claiming that grass is red, and that cows fly on the first monday of every month.  My opinion on all three of those examples is the polar opposite to yours, and therefore anything we say to each other is bound to be lost in translation.

All I will try to convey is that revenge upon an organisation which has given her more publicity than she could have ever dreamed of otherwise, definitely seems misplaced to me.

If she does release an album, I sincerely hope that it’s a soundtrack to a threatre production, which I believe she would excel at, and I also hope that she remembers to thank the Idol franchise for providing her with fans like yourself, without whom nobody would buy that album.

I don’t think that Australian Idol can take credit for discovering her.  She was that good already.  Well done for them for putting her on TV.  But with a voice like hers it was inevitable.  The negative publicity they gave her was not worth it at all.

The reality is that Tarisai has some choices.

Choice number 1 is for her to go back in to her regular life and forget about all of this.  Finish off her Psychology degree, go back to her family, her church, and people who love her, and don’t even worry about her music career.  Maybe in time something will pop up again, and then she can go with that.  But she can try to put some distance between herself and this smear that has been run against her, in the vain hope that people will forget about it (highly unlikely).

Choice number 2 is for her to go out there and try to sing songs in a way that completely ignores everything that has happened (as you suggest), and put up with music producers who at best case are going to manipulate her for less money than she deserves and more strings attached than anyone else because of the smear against her name, and worst case won’t even put her on at all.  And then when she does sing, to always have that smear against her name.

Choice number 3, which I am suggesting, is to fight back.  Release a song, if not an entire album, that turns what happened to her in to a positive.  Do it Alanis Morisette - style.  Use her big vocals, her style of singing, and put her heart and soul in to it.  No, don’t smear anyone, but just go out there and say in the lyrics, and in the performance, that she is the real thing, and that they can’t hurt her.

If you misunderstood that element, then perhaps we are in different worlds.

As for being a Tarisai fan, I only first heard her about 3 weeks ago.  I don’t watch Australian Idol, because they regularly produce mediocre performers, and the person who wins is usually not the best of the singers.

I personally don’t like John Farnham either, for the record, but I do believe that technically he is an excellent singer.  I am not enormously fond of Mariah Carey either, but technically she is probably the best in the world.  Personally my favourite singer is Michael Patton, formerly of Faith No More, although I was quite fond of the late Kurt Cobain too.

Tarisai’s music seriously isn’t the kind of music I usually listen to.  She’s like that poxy Whitney Houston or something.  But while I can’t stand Whitney Houston, Tarisai is a million times better.  And while I can pull Whitney Houston apart with the problems in her singing, Tarisai is near perfect.

I’m not sure if the time you’ve known about her should be an indicator of whether you’re a fan or not… but I find your comments extremely interesting, from a purely scientific point of view.

I think anyone suggesting that Tarisai is a million times better than, well.. anyone, let alone Whitney Houston should donate their brain to science as soon as possible.

I’m sure the best scientific minds in the world would love to strap you to a machine and poke around in your head trying to determine exactly what causes love-blindness, or in your case love-deafness.

Tarisai near perfect… Whitney Houston poxy…

You know when grandma lets it slip that her vagina is itchy?  That’s the reaction I have when you say things like that.

Your posts are dripping with love for Tarisai, I think maybe you’re well beyond a mere fan, and more power to you, but perhaps you should acknowledge that, and give up pretending you’re balanced.
